Ingredients:

  • 5-6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch thick pieces (approx. 600-720 grams / 1.32-1.58 lbs)
  • 2 teaspoons (5 grams / 0.18 oz) cinnamon
  • 5 tablespoons (60 grams / 2.12 oz) sugar
  • 3 cups (360 grams / 12.7 oz) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (400 grams / 14.1 oz) sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml / 8.11 fl oz) vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml / 2.03 fl oz) orange juice
  • 3 teaspoons (12 grams / 0.42 oz) baking powder
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons (12.5 ml / 0.42 fl oz) vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon (5 grams / 0.18 oz) salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or spray an angel food cake pan, optionally sprinkling a bit of granulated sugar inside.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together 5 tablespoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon.
  3. Toss the sliced apples with the cinnamon-sugar mixture until they are well coated.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, orange juice, baking powder, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  5. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan. Layer half of the cinnamon-sugar-coated apples over the batter.
  6. Cover the apples with the remaining batter, then top with the rest of the apples.
  7. Bake for approximately 1 1/2 hours, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  8. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes. Run a knife around the edges to loosen the cake, then carefully turn it out onto a plate or cooling rack.

Notes:

  • Substitutions: You can use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour for a healthier twist. Coconut oil can replace vegetable oil for a subtle flavor change.
  • Cooking Tips: Ensure the apples are evenly coated with the cinnamon-sugar mixture for consistent flavor throughout the cake. If you prefer a less sweet cake, reduce the sugar in the batter by 1/4 cup.
  • Nutritional Information: This cake is rich in fiber from the apples and contains healthy fats from the vegetable oil. For a lower-calorie option, substitute some of the sugar with a sugar alternative like Stevia.
