Every year, my family and I look forward to our annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, where we indulge in all our favorite Mexican dishes, including homemade chalupas. It all started when we visited a local Mexican restaurant and fell in love with their crispy chalupas topped with an array of mouthwatering toppings. Determined to recreate the magic at home, we experimented with different recipes until we perfected our own version of homemade chalupas. Now, it’s become a cherished tradition in our household, with everyone eagerly pitching in to make the dough, fry the shells, and assemble the toppings. The best part? Customizing each chalupa with our favorite ingredients and enjoying the vibrant flavors with a side of salsa and guacamole. It’s a fiesta in every bite!

Ingredients:
Chalupa Bread:
- 360 g (3 cups) all-purpose flour (Maida)
- 22.5 ml (1.5 tbsp) baking powder
- 5 ml (1 tsp) salt, or to taste
- 30 g (2 tbsp) melted butter
- 300 ml (1 ¼ cups) milk, preferably full fat
- Oil for frying
Toppings:
- 400 g (2 cups) black beans
- 160 g (2 cups) lettuce, chopped
- 240 g (1 cup) tomatoes, chopped
- 180 ml (¾ cup) sour cream
- 180 ml (¾ cup) queso sauce
- 180 ml (¾ cup) cheese (such as pepper jack), grated
Instructions:
Chalupa Bread:
- In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and melted butter. Mix well.
- Gradually add milk to the flour mixture and knead until a soft dough forms. Cover and let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 15 equal balls. Roll each ball into a 5-inch circle.
- Prick the rolled dough a few times with a fork.
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Gently slide the dough into the hot oil.
- Fry the dough for 30 seconds on one side until it puffs up. Use tongs to flip the dough over and gently fold it in half (like a taco shell).
- Hold the dough in that shape as it fries for another 30 seconds. Roll the shell over to cook evenly. It should be done after about 2 minutes of frying.
- Remove the shell and let it drain on a paper towel. Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
Add Toppings:
- Once the shells have drained, fill them with black beans, sour cream, queso sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and grated cheese.
- Serve immediately with your favorite hot sauce.
