When I stumbled upon the idea of adding brown butter and dulce de leche to the mix, I knew I had to give it a try. The first batch was a revelation – the nutty aroma of browned butter mingling with the decadent sweetness of dulce de leche created a flavor profile that was simply unforgettable. Ingredients:

  • 113 grams (5 tablespoons) Butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 340 grams (10 cups) Mini Marshmallows, divided
  • 170 grams (6 cups) Rice Krispies Cereal (cinnamon sugar flavored, see note)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt, fine grain
  • 1/2 Can Dulce de Leche

Instructions:

  1. Spray a 9×9-inch pan with non-stick spray and line it with a foil or parchment paper sling. Spray again for easy removal.
  2. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter and let it brown.
  3. Once browned, remove from heat and add salt and 8 cups of mini marshmallows. Stir until melted and smooth.
  4. Add vanilla extract and stir again.
  5. Measure out the rice krispies cereal in a large bowl. Pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the cereal and mix well.
  6. Add the remaining mini marshmallows while still warm.
  7. Lightly press about half of the rice krispies mixture into the prepared pan. Flatten it down evenly.
  8. Spread the dulce de leche over the rice krispies in an even layer.
  9. Top with the remaining rice krispies mixture and press it around until evenly spread in the pan. Let it set at room temperature until cooled.

Notes:

  • For added convenience, use store-bought cinnamon sugar flavored Rice Krispies cereal.
  • To brown butter, cook it in a saucepan over medium heat until it turns golden brown and develops a nutty aroma. Be careful not to burn it.
  • Allow the treats to cool completely before slicing for easier handling. Enjoy these treats within a few days for the best texture and flavor.
