Ingredients:
- 113g Mild Italian sausage (hot can also be used) (approx. 1/4 pound)
- 1/2 green bell pepper, sliced into roughly 2.5cm long pieces
- 1/2 yellow onion, sliced into roughly 2.5cm long pieces
- 454g frozen pizza dough, thawed (approx. 1 lb)
- 120ml pizza sauce (approx. 1/2 cup)
- 113g shredded mozzarella cheese (approx. 1 cup)
- 56g grated Parmesan cheese (approx. 1/2 cup)
- 10 large slices pepperoni
- 6 slices Genoa salami
- 6 slices hot capicola ham
- 113g very thinly sliced mushrooms, uncooked (approx. 4 oz)
- 30g sliced green olives (approx. 1/4 cup)
- Pinch of red pepper flakes
- 1 egg + splash of water, beaten
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp dried Italian seasoning
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F). Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
- Cook the toppings: In a skillet over medium-high heat, add a small drizzle of olive oil and brown the Italian sausage. Drain and set aside. In the same skillet with the leftover drippings, cook the green bell pepper and onion slices until tender, about 3 minutes. Set aside.
- Assemble the stromboli: Roll out the pizza dough into a large rectangle, approximately 25x38cm (10×15 inches). Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 3.8cm (1.5 inches) border along all edges. Layer half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, followed by the pepperoni slices, salami slices, capicola slices, mushrooms, cooked Italian sausage, cooked onion and green pepper, and green olives. Top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
- Egg wash: In a small bowl, combine the egg and a splash of water, beating until well combined. Brush a bit of the egg wash over the un-sauced border of the dough.
- Roll up the stromboli: Starting with a long edge of the stromboli, roll up into a log shape, pinching in the sides as you roll to seal the filling inside. If the dough is too sticky, dust your hands with flour.
- Bake: Carefully transfer the stromboli to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the entire top of the stromboli with the remaining beaten egg. Sprinkle with garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and Parmesan cheese. Using a sharp knife, make a couple of roughly 5cm (2 inches) long diagonal slits in the top of the stromboli. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the center of the stromboli reaches at least 93°C (200°F) with an instant-read thermometer.
- Let rest: Allow the stromboli to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve with additional pizza or marinara sauce if desired.
Notes: Feel free to customize the toppings to your liking. You can add or omit ingredients based on your preferences. Additionally, leftovers can be wrapped tightly in foil and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Simply reheat in the oven or microwave before serving. Enjoy!
